The narrative is entrancing。 It reminded me of one of my all-time favorite books The Virgin Suicides mixed with some fairytale elements mixed with my love of the darkly dangerous writing of Elana Arnold。 Since teens are eating up murder mysteries and dark stories like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, this one will fit perfectly and while it would be nice for them to read We Were Liars it actually doesn't have so many necessary connections (other than the major spoiler elements of creating this book) The narrative is entrancing。 It reminded me of one of my all-time favorite books The Virgin Suicides mixed with some fairytale elements mixed with my love of the darkly dangerous writing of Elana Arnold。 Since teens are eating up murder mysteries and dark stories like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, this one will fit perfectly and while it would be nice for them to read We Were Liars it actually doesn't have so many necessary connections (other than the major spoiler elements of creating this book) that you would have to in order to enjoy it。 The writing style is aggravatingly lovely。 The love-to-hate。 The fanciness of the Sinclair family's summers even though it was Carrie's life as she continually mentions。 Yet with so much secrecy and pain, it's not surprising that there are ghosts and tragedy。 Definitely a worthy read。 。。。more

This prequel to "We Were Liars" didn't really need to be written。 It wasn't as strong as "We Were Liars" and the beginning was quite confusing trying to sort out the characters and who was narrating。 I think there was an assumption by Lockhart that the reader remembered a lot of "We Were Liars" (which I did not。) I loved the premise of living on a private island that was set up in "We Were Liars" but the joy and uniqueness of living on the island didn't come through in this book。 ARC courtesy of This prequel to "We Were Liars" didn't really need to be written。 It wasn't as strong as "We Were Liars" and the beginning was quite confusing trying to sort out the characters and who was narrating。 I think there was an assumption by Lockhart that the reader remembered a lot of "We Were Liars" (which I did not。) I loved the premise of living on a private island that was set up in "We Were Liars" but the joy and uniqueness of living on the island didn't come through in this book。 ARC courtesy of NetGalley。 。。。more

Pfeff’s flirting with Caroline, giving a romantic first kiss in the moonlight, awakes so many foreign feelings and pure excitement Caroline has never felt before。 But things uncontrollably change as Caroline finds herself surrounded by web of lies, betrayals, secrets! Only way to survive at that haunted summer and become a part of family mean she has to learn how to lie and how to pretend like all Sinclairs do all the time。 This tragic, gripping, well written, thought provoking story, heart wrenching, twisty story will deeply affect you and shake you to the core! Most of the characters including sisters of Caroline were dislikable。 I think I mostly loved Yardley: she’s smart, confident and devoted friend who stood up for Caroline and I think I cannot say no to another prequel to learn more about her story evolved。 This book doesn’t have a jaw dropping twist but it’s a sensitive psychological and realistic fiction that portraits an unforgettable dysfunctional family。 Special thanks to NetGalley and Random House Children’s / Delacorte Press for sharing this one of the most anticipated books’ digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts。 。。。more

We Were Liars was a suspense-filled book that kept me wondering how the mystery would be solved。 Family of Liars was disappointing when compared to the original。 It is a new summer and a new set of circumstances, but the mystery isn’t there。 Readers discover what happened relatively early on and the mystery is the why behind the episode。 The author’s note does warn that this is a prequel and spoilers will be given to the original story, but overall this story was not as good as We Were Liars。 I We Were Liars was a suspense-filled book that kept me wondering how the mystery would be solved。 Family of Liars was disappointing when compared to the original。 It is a new summer and a new set of circumstances, but the mystery isn’t there。 Readers discover what happened relatively early on and the mystery is the why behind the episode。 The author’s note does warn that this is a prequel and spoilers will be given to the original story, but overall this story was not as good as We Were Liars。 I wanted to have a five-star adventure, but sadly it was only a three-star read。 。。。more

Why?! It gives you all of those fun summer vacation vibes… yet with all of the underlying feeling in your stomach that something is seriously not right。I really liked the fact that this instalment dug a little bit deeper into some of the things that were touched on in the first book。 We got a proper look at privilege and how this family and their wealth comes from - a product of exploitation of many generations of people of colour and the disgusting reality of that。 It didn’t sugar coat anything, but brought it forward to be laid bare and scrutinised。 I feel like having read a couple of e。lockhart books now, I can really see how much she;s grown as an author and how her writing and ideas have grown with her。 Her work feels so much more polished and refined now, the voice of this novel feels a lot more mature and something that I really enjoyed。 Some people hated the writing style in WWL and here it feels more refined and though you can still tell they’re linked, this feels like it has built on the initial writing style nicely。Very much like WWL, this book had quite an emotional aspect to it and packed more of a punch - this felt more explicit in its trauma than the first book though。 The first book didn’t feel all that melancholic until you realised, this one is pretty bleak throughout for a variety of reasons but handled with care。 It dealt a lot with the heaviness of grieving and loss, growing pains and coming of age and trying to fit in and be noticed, and had a complicated discussion and depiction of familial relationships。 I liked how it handled all of these things and it felt really well rounded, the style of the storytelling and how everything slowly unravels really works well to give you that connection with the characters too。 It makes it all hurt just that little bit more。The plot twists upon plot twists near the end of this book… I actually gasped out loud。 Just when you think everything is going a little too smoothly, of course it's too good to be true。 It’s the Sinclair’s, come on。 And just when you think you’re done with the plot twists, it twists just that little bit more to be thorough and make sure you’re definitely in shock。 I was in shock, that’s for sure。 Definitely a book that you pick up and don’t want to put down until you’ve fully solved just what on earth is going on。All in all, I liked this a lot and I think it did a great service to the nostalgia that the WWL gave me。 It was great to revisit the island and some of the characters again, with a fresh look at things and a new story to be told。 My only tiny peeves is that it was just a little dry in the middle and though the ending was great, it could’ve packed a couple more twists in the middle instead of saving them all。If you liked We Were Liars the first time around, I think you’ll like this one a lot too。 It's morbidly fascinating。 。。。more
